What to expect when you visit The Knee Center

It's natural to be anxious or concerned when you are injured or are in discomfort. The Knee Center staff will do it's best to put you at ease, and make your appointment go as smoothly as possible.

Maryann and Carol are here to help! They'll be happy to answer any questions you may have about your appointment, insurance paperwork, or billing.

When the doctor sees you, he will examine the location of your discomfort, and conduct an interview to learn more about the specifics of your complaint. To help him with his diagnosis, he may touch or move your leg in specific ways.

He may ask questions such as how long you've been in discomfort, if the pain changes as a result of specific activities, or if the joint ever feels unstable or like it will "give out".

The doctor may x-ray your leg
Dependent upon what his examination and interview reveals, the doctor may require additional information to complete his diagnosis. He may have the area of your complaint x-rayed, or scanned with an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine so that he can "see" some of the important structures inside your body.

Both procedures are painless, and can be performed in the same building as The Knee Center, or at various other convenient locations in the area.

When Dr. Cooper's diagnosis is complete, he will share with you what he feels to be the most effective treatment for your complaint.

Some knee problems are addressed most effectively by medication, strengthening exercises, or simple lifestyle changes, like wearing supportive footwear, or using trekking poles when hiking on steep terrain.

Some situations, however, require more extensive measures, including surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. Regardless of your diagnosis, you can be confident that Dr. Cooper will apply his extensive experience and knowledge of state-of-the-art medical techniques to recommend the least invasive, most effective program for your particular situation.

During Your Appointment
  • To get the most from your examination with Dr. Cooper, be honest and complete in discussing your problem. Share your point of view and don’t hold back information. Details that may seem trivial to you could provide the doctor insight into your condition, and affect his recommendations.


  • Take notes on what the doctor tells you, and ask questions if you don’t understand a medical term or the reason for the doctor’s recommendations.


  • Ask what to expect from your treatment, what limitations to place on your daily activities, and what you can do to prevent further injury.


  • Ask for handouts, brochures, or Internet web site addresses for more information that you and your family members can review at home.


    • After Your Appointment
  • Review the materials the doctor gave you. If you can’t remember something, or if you don’t understand your notes, call the office for clarification.


  • Follow the doctor’s instructions. Take the full course of medication and follow the prescribed diet or exercise routine.


  • Keep the doctor informed of any test results, adverse reactions to medication, complications or worsening of your condition.
